Hawassa Warms Up to Host EPRDF Convention

Hawassa, seat of the Southern regional state, is preparing to host the three-day convention by the ruling EPRDF, which is expected to commence tomorrow with close to 1,000 delegates in attendance.

Apart from the members of the four allied parties, leaders of opposition parties, civil societies and representatives of communities will attend the congress, according to members of the organizing committee.

The coalition parties have been undertaking their respective meetings for the past three weeks. They have elected their political bureau and central committee members, chairs and deputy chairpersons.

Two of them, the Oromo Democratic Party, and the Amhara Democratic Party, have also changed their names, a first for any political organisation since their formation.

All of the four coalition parties have reelected their chairpersons and deputies. Abiy Ahmed (PhD), Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD), Demeke Mekonnen and Muferiat Kemal were reelected as chairpersons of OPD, TPLF, ADP and SDPM, respectively.

During the three-day-long congress of the EPRDF, members are expected to elect the chairperson and the deputy of the Front.
