OPDO Changes Guard at the Top




The Oromo Peoples’ Democratic Movement (OPDO), one of the constituent parties of the ruling EPRDF, has elevated its secretary to the position of the chairmanship. In an emergency meeting its 81-member Central Committee held today, February 22, 2018, Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has been elected as a chairman, replacing Lemma Megerssa, who is now a deputy chairman.

It appears to be a tactical move eyeing the chairmanship of the EPRDF, following the resignation of Hailemariam Desalegn after serving the party as a chairman for six years. Further, though, the new chairman of the EPRDF will likely become the next Prime Minister of the country but also need to be a member of parliament. Unlike Lemma, Abiy is an MP and had served as a Minister of Science & Technology.
