Regional Bank Names Mekonnen as Senior Advisor

Eastern & South African Trade and Development Bank (TDB), formerly known as the PTA, has appointed Mekonnen Manyazewal, the once retired but long-serving economist, as its senior adviser.

The financial arm of the Common Market for Eastern & Southern Africa (COMESA), TDB appointed Mekonnen on August 1 to advise it on areas of trade, finance, export-generation projects, foreign direct investments and infrastructure projects.

His last assignment was at the Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI) as executive director in the rank of minister. Before moving to EDRI, he was an advisor to the prime minister on International Trade & Negotiations Affairs. He also served as commissioner of the National Planning Commission, state minister for Finance & Economic Development and Minister of Industry.

Mekonnen, who actively engaged with the design of the Growth & Transformational Plan, was a board member of various state enterprises, including the National Bank of Ethiopia, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Industrial Parks Development Corporation, Ethiopian Commodity Exchange, Electric Utility and Ethiopian Railway Corporation.

Mekonnen earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Addis Abeba University (AAU) and a master’s degree in development economics from Erasmus University in The Netherlands. He served the country in different positions in the areas of development policy and planning; macroeconomic policy and management; external economic cooperation management; and design and management economic reforms.

TDB is mandated to finance and foster trade, socioeconomic development and regional economic integration through trade finance, project and infrastructure finance, funds management and business advisory services.
