STRIKE! City Rail Transit Employees Walk Off Job

Over half of the 1,200 staff of the Addis Abeba Light Railway Transit (AA-LRT) are on a strike this morning, demanding higher salaries and benefit packages.

The employees have made earlier requests to management for allowances, salary raises, dormitories and improvements on food and benefit packages. Their Labour Union had previously forwarded the same demands to the board of the Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC), six times.

The Board of Directors, chaired by Selishi Bekele (PhD), and management of the company begun negotiations with the labour union leaders, yesterday. The board had agreed to respond to most of their demands, according to Dereje Tefera, communications director at the ERC.

“But they went on a strike demanding assurances on the agreements,” Dereje told Fortune. “We hope they will resume service very soon.”

The 31.6Km-long Light Rail Project (LRT) was constructed by the Chinese China Railway Group LTD for 475 million dollars and commenced operation in 2015.
