The Oromia Regional State has handed over the mining query at Yayu Coal Deposit to the local youth. The site was under Metals & Engineering Corporation (MetEC), which has been extracting and generating revenue from it.
MetEC’s right of extracting the site was suspended a year ago. The military-industrial complex has been mining the site for the past seven years to source raw material for Yayu Fertiliser Factory, which is still not operational as the project has been delayed.
This was a source of discontent for the locals and caused a dispute between the regional state and the corporation. Consequently, the region has officially handed over the site to 117 youth in the area.
