Premier Appoints Girma Birru to Chair Central Bank Board

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has appointed Girma Birru, a competent and old hand in macroeconomic management, to chair the board of directors of the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), replacing Mekonnen Manyazewal.

The Prime Minister assigned Girma for the chairmanship position on July 19, 2018, adding Eyob Tekalegn, the new commissioner of the Planning Commission, and Bekalu Zeleke, vice governor of the central bank, in the board of directors.

Abraham Tekeste (PhD), minister of Finance & Economic Cooperation, and Teklewolde Atnafu, former governor of the central bank and currently heading the financial affairs office in the Prime Minister’s Office, have also been included in the board of directors.

Girma was ambassador to the United States for five years. Before being assigned as an ambassador in 2010, he served as Minister of Trade & Industry as well as Economic Development & Cooperation. Girma has also chaired the board of the Ethiopian Revenues Administration, and had been the Deputy Minister of Finance, Administration & Logistics at the Ministry of Defense, and filled the role of Chief Advisor to the Minister of Defense on economic issues.
